Rainbow Shiner
Hydrophlox chrosomus/Notropis chrosomus
The Rainbow Shiner is a spectacular COOL-water fish, admired for its shimmering blue, pink, purple and golden colouring. Mature males become especially vibrant when displaying or in breeding condition, creating an incredible flash of colour as the group moves around the aquarium.
Active and highly social, Rainbow Shiners should be kept in a group of at least six, although a larger shoal will produce a far more impressive and natural display. They appreciate plenty of open swimming space, excellent water quality, good oxygenation and a gentle-to-moderate flow. Lidded tanks needed, great jumpers.
Rainbow Shiners are best suited to an unheated or cool-water aquarium and should be housed with peaceful species that enjoy similar conditions. Feed a varied diet of quality flakes or small granules alongside frozen and live foods to encourage their finest colour and condition.
